Chapin-Ward House

32 Gray Street, Amherst, MA

Chapin-Ward House, built 1903

The Chapin-Ward House moved to its "new home" on Gray Street in November 2007 from its "birthplace" on Kendrick Park - less than a mile from where it currently stands. The last remaining house on Kendrick Park, it was moved to make room for a town park.

This three-bedroom, 2,400 square foot house is undergoing a complete renovation, with a new roof, deck, electric, plumbing, insulation, natural gas-fueled hot water heating system with adjustable radiators and radiant-heat floors.

The main floor combines the charm of the original house - wood floors, oak trim, chair rails, stained glass - with a new addition: a modern kitchen open to a vast family room and fireplace, 1/2-bath and pantry.

The second floor has three bedrooms, including an oversized master bedroom with walk-in closet and private bath. There are two full bathrooms on the floor.

The attic is finished as ideal for open play space or an office. Because of the relocation, the house boasts a new full, step-out basement plumbed for a full bath and laundry.

The Chapin-Ward house also includes a two-story carriage house and garage with plenty of storage room and the perfect space for a detached studio or auxiliary apartment.

Completion date: December 2008. Floor plans: 1st floor and 2nd floor. Listing: 32 Gray Street.

Brett and Sandra McDowell bought the Chapin-Ward House in February 2009.
